A few weeks ago I have decided to join another production as a DoP for my Dissertation Project. I will be working with Mairi Maxwell Wood and Rudi Leandro on the film Red Band (working title). Currently we are at the very early stages of preproduction as the idea for the film has been changed repeatedly. When I first joined the team we were supposed to work on a film called Suicide Hotline. Therefore, for the past few weeks I have been doing my research on male depression and suicide. Unfortunately, my director has decided he does not feel passionate enough about the story to make this film for his Dissertation Project. Even though I was very excited for the previous idea, now that we are developing the new one it seems like we made a good decision to change it.
Red Band is a story of an artificially intelligent android, who struggles to find a job. He lives in the world where androids are demonized by society and need to face intolerance and discrimination. The film is a symbolic examination of societies’ attitudes towards immigrants and refugees in the current climate.
In terms of cinematography we're going for a social realism style, taking references from films like Fish Tank or American Honey. What I will be taking out of these films is mostly camera movement and a documentary kind of style to it. Robbie Ryan, the cinematographer, who worked closely with Andrea Arnolds on most of her films said:
